"Mackenzie's Time to Shine" is the thirteenth episode of the fifth season of Dance Moms. It first aired March 31, 2015.

Synopsis

It's the last week before the ALDC tries to make another go of it in Los Angeles and Maddie is away again, this time dancing on Saturday Night Live. With her sister gone, Mackenzie has the chance to remind everyone she is more than just Maddie's little sister. Up against Cathy's new premium Candy Apple's team, Abby decides to push the envelope with a sassy and funky routine as Cathy is still reeling from their loss the week before. Will this risky routine be enough to beat Cathy again?

Competition Attended

Other Information

  • Pyramid
    • Kalani
    • Mackenzie, Nia
    • Kendall, JoJo
  • Maddie performed on Saturday Night Live the date of the competition (NBC video, YouTube VEVO version).[3] She was not at the competition.
  • The ALDC group dance was based on the girl group Spice Girls. Each girl portrayed a member of the group.
    • JoJo was Baby Spice
    • Kalani was Sporty Spice
    • Kendall was Posh Spice
    • Mackenzie was Ginger Spice
    • Nia was Scary Spice
  • Official results (archive) list JoJo as first in the junior division. First "overall" (combined ages) was listed as Bradi Whitacre (link to 2014 YouTube video), who would have been approximately 18 to 20 years old, competing as a junior in 2006 at Hall of Fame regionals,[4] and as a senior in 2014 at KAR and VIP.[5][6] The dancer was not listed in senior results, and may have passed the age of 19 (WCTE's cut-off age into pre-professional division.) Combining age categories into an "overall" category of awards has been usual at the show's competitions since the middle of Season 4, although the editing in broadcasts has not always been consistent in the way this has been presented along with uncombined age category "overalls."
  • After Abby instagrammed this picture (and several similar to it) promoting the ALDC tour, the speculation that Nia and Holly were no longer members of the ALDC grew because Nia would not be going to the meet and greets with the other girls. In response, Holly tweeted this which said that Nia is still a member of the ALDC.
  • The date of the competition was also Haley's 13th birthday.
  • Kendall wore the costume from "The Heist" for the group dance.
  • In the dressing room shouting match with Cathy, someone is yelling about a garage sale and selling stuff. The new CADC team was rumored to be selling off their previously acquired ALDC merchandise.[7]
  • On her Instagram, Abby "congratulated" the CADC. Parts of Abby's message included:
    • Abby noting the wonderful technique of the CADC dancers, saying that she should know, since people might recognize some of them from Abby's Ultimate Dance Competition, her auditions, or "even training at my studio."
    • describing the CADC dancers as "hired" for "the wicked witch of the west"
    • calling the ages of the CADC dancers "interesting"
    • asking viewers if they really thought her style was to do a Spice Girls novelty act, if she hadn't been forced
    • suggesting that she wasn't allowed to bring in a replacement for Maddie, even from her own studio
    • saying that she has been respectful of production, but was "not about to own anything Spicy!"
